Firefighter Certification, Licensing, Training and Examination Requirements by State

Aspiring Oklahoma Firefighter Summary of Training Requirements

Call Oklahoma State University Fire Service Training at 1-800-304-5727 to register for a class. Preregistration is required for all Fire Service Training classes. Registration will begin 60 days prior to the class start date. All registration fee amounts quoted throughout this brochure are for Oklahoma emergency responders. If you need information on out-of-state, industrial, or government costs, please call the OFST office.

Levels of IFSAC and NPQS Accreditation: Firefighter I & II, Fire Inspector I & II, Fire Officer I & II, Fire Service Instructor I & II, Haz-Mat Awareness, Operations, and Technician. Look at the current Skill Sheets.

Job entry requirements-Oklahoma City. Many fire departments have similar requirements. Inquire with the fire department you are testing for to see what their requirements are.

* Applicants must be 18 to 44 years of age.
* Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
* Must be a U.S. Citizen, or have a legal right to work in the U.S.
* Must posses a valid drivers license.
* Pass a testing process, which includes a written examination, oral review board, and physical ability test
* Clear a background investigation relating to employment history, criminal history, and drug testing.

Hiring preference may be given to applicants who possess a state of Oklahoma or National Paramedic license.

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
This test is conducted to determine a candidate's ability to physically perform duties commonly required of a Firefighter. As the fire service expands more and more fire departments adopt the CPAT or a similar physical agility test.
